Overview

Enablence is a leader in optical design and manufacturing for planar lightwave circuits (PLC). We are a leading provider of optical chips for datacom and telecom, and we are expanding into many other applications, including LiDAR, OCT and accelerated computing for AI workloads.

The Fab Director will oversee all aspects of the photonic planar lightwave circuit (PLC) manufacturing operations, covering both frontend and backend production processes. This role requires extensive experience in photonic manufacturing, strong leadership skills, and the ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of industry trends and advanced technologies to ensure the highest standards of production and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership:

  • Lead and manage the daily operations of the photonic PLC fabrication and backend production facility, ensuring seamless integration between frontend and backend processes.

  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize both frontend and backend production processes for improved operational efficiency, yield, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Ensure adherence to production schedules and delivery commitments while maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.

  • Coordinate with supply chain management to ensure timely procurement of materials and minimize production disruptions.

Process and Quality Management:

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of photonic PLC fabrication, assembly, packaging, and testing processes to ensure product quality and yield.

  • Ensure compliance with industry quality assurance standards, customer requirements, and regulatory guidelines.

  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify and address areas for improvement in both frontend and backend processes, ensuring continuous quality enhancement.

  • Implement robust quality management systems and process controls to mitigate risks and ensure product reliability.

Team Management:

  • Recruit, train, and develop a high-performing team of managers, engineers, and technicians across both frontend and backend operations, fostering a culture of excellence.

  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement within the production teams, promoting professional growth and development.

  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and mentorship to team members, aligning individual goals with organizational objectives.

  • Encourage innovation and creative problem-solving within the team to drive operational improvements and efficiency gains.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies across the entire production chain, from frontend fabrication to backend assembly and packaging.

  • Implement best practices and innovative solutions to enhance fab and backend operations, leveraging new technologies and process innovations.

  • Lead efforts to reduce costs, improve yield, and increase throughput while maintaining or enhancing product quality.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements to ensure the facility remains competitive and at the forefront of photonic manufacturing technology.

Equipment and Facility Management:

  • Ensure the proper maintenance, calibration, and operation of all fab and backend production equipment, including specialized photonic fabrication and testing tools.

  • Oversee facility management to ensure a safe, compliant, and efficient working environment, adhering to all health, safety, and environmental regulations.

  • Manage capital projects, including equipment upgrades and facility expansions, to support growth and technological advancements.

  • Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend the life of critical equipment.

Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage the production operations budget, including capital and operational expenditures for both frontend and backend processes, ensuring cost efficiency.

  • Monitor financial performance and implement cost-control measures to achieve financial targets and optimize resource allocation.

  • Provide regular reports on fab and backend performance, including financial metrics, to senior management, highlighting key achievements and areas for improvement.

  • Analyze financial data to identify trends and opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.

Strategic Planning:

  • Participate in the development of long-term strategic plans for fab and backend operations, aligning with overall company goals and objectives.

  • Develop and execute strategies to enhance the competitiveness, efficiency, and innovation of the fab and backend operations.

  • Stay informed about industry trends and advancements in photonic manufacturing, incorporating relevant innovations into strategic planning.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for strategic partnerships and collaborations to drive growth and technological leadership.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with R&D, product development, and supply chain teams to support new product introductions and process changes, ensuring smooth transitions and scalability.

  • Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to understand customer requirements and address any issues, ensuring customer satisfaction and product alignment with market needs.

  • Facilitate cross-functional communication and cooperation to achieve organizational goals and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Participate in customer and supplier meetings to discuss technical requirements, resolve issues, and strengthen relationships.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. is preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in semiconductor or photonic manufacturing, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, demonstrating a track record of successful management.

  • In-depth knowledge of photonic PLC fabrication, assembly, packaging, and testing processes, with a strong understanding of industry standards and best practices.

  • Proven track record of driving operational excellence and continuous improvement in both frontend and backend production environments.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to inspire and manage a diverse team effectively.

  • Ability to manage complex projects and work effectively with cross-functional teams, demonstrating strong project management skills.

  • Proficiency with production management software and tools, with a demonstrated ability to leverage technology for process improvement.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions and implement effective solutions.

  • Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies, with relevant certifications preferred.
